‘The Deer’s Cry at Deerhurst’
A programme inspired by the unique atmosphere of this amazing spot right by the river Severn, just outside Tewkesbury.
Deerhurst is a Saxon site with St. Mary's Priory Church, which has a high ceiling with floor plan and surrounding buildings revealing its ancient importance as a monastic centre. As well as its remarkable features, the church also has a wonderful acoustic for choral work. Nearby is the later Odda’s chapel, dating from 1057, a near complete Saxon chapel hideen for centuries within farm buildings. Our programme includes works by composers from the area like C H H Parry and Herbert Howells and also works with texts which make reference to deer, finishing with Arvo Part’s iconic piece 'The Deer’s Cry.’ |
